I'm On A Mission...

To find sleep. I know it's around here somewhere...

Sorry, insomnia struck again last night and I was up until four a.m. and got up around nine, so my butt's a draggin' again. I'm working on my next scene for NIP. No, really, the work's just mental right now.

And speaking of mental, I ended up on Kirk Cameron's website. Interesting. But only in the sense of weirdness at how two people who are believers in the same religion can be at opposite ends of the spectrum.

He is a [very polite] 'turn or burn' kind of guy. I'm not. In fact, according to him, what I believe isn't the Gospel at all, but a false gospel.

Hmm.

I will say this, though, going there gave me a perfect picture of what I don't want to be. [here's the link, but go at your own risk]

Oy, It's late now, and I want to sleep, so I'll talk to you tomorrow.

I looked at the website, and although there are some questionable areas (the STORE button is bigger than anything else on the website!) I have to say that he used what I believe to be a biblical explaination of hell and judgement. Not that I think that is the best way to share the gospel, but we can't focus on God's mercy and grace to the exclusion of His wrath. It exists.

Here's the big "BUT"

I clicked "NO" when he asked if I was a Christian, and tried to imagine myself reading that as if I really weren't. I think that if I had some church background, it would've made a much bigger impact than if I didn't. It assumes that you believe he is trustworthy and so is the Bible. Before I became a christian, I would've laughed at that site and moved on.

I think he has the right heart (meaning that he wants to see people have a relationship with God), and hopefully he has reached more people than he's turned off.

I think that where he missed the boat was dealing with sin exclusively, without mentioning that Jesus came to heal the brokenhearted. I think that is the crux of what people want in a God. They are willing to submit to an authority that truly has your best interests in mind, but not to one who is threatening you all the time and not showing any love.

Hey, Lindsay,
While I agree that the site is biblical, there was something that disturbed me in this statement from his website:

"Within the last 100 years, a new gospel has crept into our churches. It has been designed to not offend you. It has been carefully crafted not to be too "in your face." It gently suggests that you open your heart to Jesus if your current lifestyle isn't working for you, and try God "when the time is right for you." This "seeker centered" and "no offense" approach is no gospel at all; it is "another gospel". If we continue to define sin as "honest mistakes", we will continue to fill our churches with "backsliders" and false converts who fail to repent because they don't see the seriousness of their sin. We will give them a cruel false hope, and make them comfortable aboard the "Jesus loves you" pleasure cruiser, singing songs to the Captain, while they blindly speed toward the iceberg of Eternal Justice."

Specifically, this statement bothered me the most: "This "seeker centered" and "no offense" approach is no gospel at all; it is "another gospel."

I strongly disagree that the 'seeker sensitive' approach is not the true gospel. It's a valid approach to reach some non-Christians. Cameron's 'turn or burn' approach, while biblical, will turn a lot of people even more against Christians [and therefore, Jesus] than they already are.

And it's only ONE aspect of Jesus. I feel like they are preaching that their way is the 'only way' to present the gospel, and that's just plain wrong.

That's why I can't really endorse his site, not because I think he's insincere, but because I think he's misguided in an area that I think is important.

Thanks for commenting! [Sorry it took so long to reply, I was distracted]
